To receive a copy of an obituary, please use this online request form and provide the complete citation from our online obituary index

We will scan the obituary from the newspaper microfilm and email it to you. There is a fee of $5 per obituary for emailed requests.

You can come to the library and get copies of obituaries at no cost even if you do not have a library card. The newspaper microfilm is on the first level of the Main Library in the Local History room.

You can also access many years of the State newspaper online through South Carolina Historical Newspapers. A library card is required to access SC Historical Newspapers outside of the library.

The obituary index is continually being updated. It currently includes obituaries, death notices, and some marriage announcements from the following papers The State (1891-present), Columbia Record (1916-1925), The Columbia Daily Register (1875-1892), Columbia Daily Union (1892-1893), Christian Neighbor (Methodist), 1884 and 1885 and The Palmetto Leader (African American), 1925-1928, 1930, January-April 1931, 1937-1939, 1941.
